Enugu Police Bust Child Stealing and Trafficking Syndicates, Rescue Six Children and Arrest Ten Suspects

The Enugu State Police Command has made significant breakthroughs in combating child theft and trafficking, rescuing six stolen or trafficked children and arresting ten suspects involved in both local and transnational child trafficking networks. The operations were conducted between June 30 and July 16, 2025, and demonstrate the Command's commitment to protecting the rights and safety of children in the state.

The rescued children include two trafficked children, Loveth Mfonobong and Benjamin Alex Okon, who were bought by a 64-year-old woman and her 67-year-old accomplice for ₦900,000 and ₦1,400,000 respectively. The suspects, Chiaha Josephine and Ozomma Christopher Ubanagum, were arrested in Ezeagu LGA, and the children were rescued and are currently being cared for by the authorities.

In another operation, a one-year-and-seven-month-old male child was rescued, and the suspect, Chiemerie Daniel Onwe, was arrested and arraigned in court. The child's mother, a trader at the cattle market in New Garriki, Awkunanaw, Enugu, had reported her son stolen, and the police were able to track down the suspect and recover the child.

The Command also foiled a transnational child trafficking attempt, rescuing a 14-year-old female victim who was trafficked to Ghana. The suspects, Mirabel Oluebube and Udenze Ifeanyi, were arrested and arraigned in court, and the victim was safely reunited with her family.

In addition, the police rescued an eleven-month-old baby girl who was stolen from a salon in Ogui, and arrested the suspect, Ogbuzuru Ifebuche. The baby was recovered, and the suspect was apprehended and manhandled by an angry mob before being rescued and rearrested by the police.

Furthermore, a newborn baby boy was rescued from a child trafficking ring, and three suspects, Chinenye Ozoagu, Ogochukwu Ozoagu, and Chidinma Ukpai, were arrested. The suspects had sold the baby for ₦1,400,000, but the police were able to recover the child and apprehend the suspects.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, has commended the operatives' professionalism and swift responses, cautioning parents and guardians to be watchful and protect their children. The Command reaffirms its commitment to fighting crimes against children and urges the public to provide timely and credible information to aid in the fight against child trafficking.

The Enugu State Police Command's efforts in combating child theft and trafficking demonstrate its dedication to protecting the rights and safety of children in the state.
