Governor Diri Highlights Poor Implementation of Research Findings as Key to Nigeria's Stunted Development
Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, has attributed Nigeria's stunted development to the poor implementation of research findings by government and other relevant public institutions. The Governor made this statement when he received a delegation of Senior Executive Course 47 from the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS), Kuru, Jos, during a courtesy call in Government House, Yenagoa.
Governor Diri lamented that despite the significant resources invested in research by various institutions, Nigeria fails to deploy useful research findings and reports for the nation's development. He condemned the practice of investing resources in research without implementing the findings, noting that this had become a major obstacle to Nigeria's progress on all frontiers.
The Governor emphasized the importance of implementing research findings, pointing out that if the critical research results from NIPSS had been implemented, the country would have made significant progress. He noted that NIPSS has diligently carried out strategic studies on different themes over the years, but the findings have not been utilized to drive development.
Governor Diri highlighted Bayelsa State's potential in the marine and blue economy, noting that the state is the epicentre of the trillion-dollar potential marine and blue economy in terms of its strategic location and vast marine resources. He assured the NIPSS team of the State Government's close collaboration and cooperation throughout their stay in the state to ensure substantial achievement of the study objectives.
The Governor's assurance of collaboration and cooperation with NIPSS is a welcome development, as it will enable the institute to gather necessary information for a comprehensive report that will help in building the new ministry of marine and blue economy and facilitate proper harnessing of marine resources in the country.
Governor Diri's statement highlights the need for Nigeria to prioritize the implementation of research findings to drive development. The country's potential for growth and development can only be realized if research findings are utilized to inform policy decisions and drive development initiatives. The Bayelsa State Government's commitment to collaborating with NIPSS is a step in the right direction, and it is hoped that this partnership will yield positive outcomes for the state and the country at large.
To address the problem of poor implementation of research findings, the government needs to prioritize the utilization of research results in policy decisions. This can be achieved by creating a framework for implementing research findings, providing incentives for researchers, and promoting a culture of evidence-based decision-making. By doing so, Nigeria can unlock its potential for growth and development and achieve sustainable development.
