Nigerian Correctional Service Hosts Ghana Prisons Service Delegates
The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) recently played host to a high-powered delegation from the Ghana Prison Service, led by its Director of Prisons, Yahaya Ishaq. The courtesy visit was part of a 5-day joint seminar organized by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) on "Strategic Leadership Dialogue: Leading Transformational Change".
The visit marked a significant milestone in the efforts to deepen bilateral cooperation and exchange best practices in custodial administration across West Africa. The Ghanaian delegation held extensive discussions with the Nigerian correctional leadership on areas of mutual interest, including inmate rehabilitation, staff training, infrastructure development, and the use of technology in corrections management.
The Controller General of Corrections, Sylvester Ndidi Nwakuche, described the visit as timely and strategic, stressing the importance of inter-agency collaboration within the West African sub-region to address evolving correctional challenges. He highlighted recent reforms, progress, and developments in the NCoS and noted that the service is open to knowledge sharing and regional partnerships that foster professionalism, humane custody, and global best practices.
Both parties agreed to explore joint training programs, exchange visits, and research partnerships, with a commitment to institutionalizing a more robust synergy. The visit ended with a presentation of plaque and a guided tour of the NCoS digital hub within the headquarters.
The Director of Prisons, Yahaya Ishaq, applauded the strides made by the Nigerian Correctional Service in reforming its custodial operations and infrastructure. He emphasized the need for continuous learning and synergy between sister services, especially in the face of rising transnational crimes, prison congestion, and the global call for improved inmate reformation programs.
The visit has strengthened the ties between the Nigerian Correctional Service and the Ghana Prison Service, paving the way for future collaborations and knowledge sharing. The two services share a common goal of promoting professionalism, humane custody, and global best practices in corrections management.
