Police Clarify Position on Retired Officers' Protest, Assure Security and Dignity

The Nigeria Police Force has addressed the ongoing conversations surrounding the peaceful protest being organized by some retired police officers over their pension entitlements. While acknowledging the legitimacy of the retirees' grievances, the Force expressed disappointment over the politicization of the issue and the spread of misinformation.

The Nigeria Police Force emphasized its commitment to the welfare of retired officers and highlighted the efforts made by successive Inspectors-General of Police since 2014 to address the issue of pension entitlements. The Force explained that exiting the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS) is beyond its remit due to statutory mandates, inter-agency protocols, and policy inertia.

The current Police leadership is pursuing a dual-track strategy to address the immediate plight of retired officers. This includes:

- Utilizing internally generated revenues to provide supplementary pension benefits

- Mobilizing private sector and corporate support for targeted pension enhancement initiatives

The Nigeria Police Force has assured the protection of the rights of the retired officers who plan to proceed with the protest. The Force emphasized its commitment to maintaining law and order while ensuring the dignity and safety of all participants.

The protest is scheduled to take place on Monday, July 21, 2025, primarily within the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and other State Commands where prior notification has been given. The Inspector-General of Police has assured that the rights of the protesters will be protected, and the protest will be peaceful.
