Ebonyi State Government Orders Investigation into Hostel Building Collapse

The Governor of Ebonyi State, Rt. Hon. Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru, has ordered a full-scale investigation into the collapse of a hostel building at Alex Ekwueme Federal University, Ndufu Alike Ikwo. The Governor expressed concern over the incident, noting that most building collapses are caused by human error and non-compliance with building codes.

Governor Nwifuru lamented the development, stating that it is disheartening to learn about building collapse in an era when skilled manpower and well-established professional standards are available. He attributed the incessant building collapse in the country to poor construction practices and flagrant disregard for building codes.

The Governor charged relevant bodies and agencies to step up monitoring and supervision of building projects from foundation to completion. He directed the Ministry of Capital City Development to ensure that any developer wishing to embark on building projects must get approval.

Governor Nwifuru assured that anyone found culpable in the incident will be made to face the law after the investigation. He advised developers to always engage professionals in the execution of their building projects, emphasizing the importance of accountability and professionalism in the construction industry.

The Governor urged regulatory agencies, such as the Nigerian Society of Engineers and the Nigerian Institute of Building, to ensure that building collapse becomes a thing of the past in the country. He emphasized that their integrity is at stake and that they have a critical role to play in preventing such incidents.
