IGP Praises Bayelsa Governor for Honoring Police Officer

The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has praised the Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, for honoring Superintendent of Police (SP) Sentome Obi, the Police Officer of the Year 2024. The recognition ceremony, held on July 23, 2025, in Yenagoa, was a testament to SP Obi's exceptional service and commitment to integrity.


SP Obi, a Bayelsa native and Head of the Financial and Cybercrime Unit at Zone 16 Command, Yenagoa, earned national acclaim for refusing a $17,000 bribe aimed at derailing a sensitive investigation. His principled stance, executed under operational pressure, exemplifies the highest standards of ethical policing.

The Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, presented SP Obi with a brand-new Toyota Corolla and a fully furnished three-bedroom bungalow, a gesture that the IGP described as a "watershed moment" in institutionalizing integrity within Nigeria's security architecture.

The IGP commended the Governor's gesture, stating that it promotes integrity and professionalism within the police force. He emphasized that the Nigeria Police Force is committed to celebrating and rewarding officers who demonstrate excellence and integrity.

The IGP reaffirmed the Nigeria Police Force's commitment to professionalism and integrity, stating that the Force Management Team has adopted a merit-driven framework for promotion. The framework includes accelerated promotion for officers who have won national awards, such as the Police Officer of the Year award.

The IGP also announced that SP Obi's portrait, along with that of CSP Aliyu Shaba, the recipient of the Police Officer of the Year award 2023, would be displayed prominently at the entrances of all State and Zonal Command Headquarters, the main entrance of Louis Edet House (Force Headquarters, Abuja), and the Nigeria Police Hall of Fame.

The recognition and reward of SP Obi's integrity and professionalism are expected to have a positive impact on policing in Nigeria. The IGP's initiative aims to promote a culture of integrity and professionalism within the police force, which will enhance public trust and confidence in the police.
